Earthleen
Briggs, a lifelong quilter, has stitched literally hundreds of quilts and
is a
recognized leader among quilters in the Southern California area. Her work
has been showcased on numerous occasions throughout the San Diego area.
Her works have received honorable mention in the "Quilters
Newsletter" magazine (November 1997), and have appeared in the "Communion of
the Spirits" exhibition at the San Diego Historical Society Museum
(February 2000).
Ms. Briggs learned the
art of quilting from her mother, when at an early age, she was shown how to use
an old sewing machine to piece together patches of fabric from her brothers
shirts and old clothing donated by the church. In this manner Ms. Briggs
made quilts and her own clothing. She describes quilting in those days as
a "necessary pastime," yet despite the necessity of the operation,
Earthleen remembers fondly the time spent quilting with her mother and listening
to the radio. Ms. Briggs has refined her skills in quilting over more than
40 years, using the art as a form of therapy while her husband was away during
his 31 year career in the U.S. Navy.
Finally, after raising
two children and herself completing a twenty year career as a teacher, counselor and
school administrator in the Sweetwater High School District in San Diego, CA, Earthleen Briggs
has retired to work on her passion - quilting. Establishing Ethnic
Quilts & Fabrics
is the realization of a lifelong dream for Ms. Briggs, it is the culmination of
her many years of experience and is yet another expression of her love of the
art that has given so much to her and her
family.
